Chat Roulette experience

Having read a piece in today’s Observer about Chat Roulette I fired it up earlier and had a scary experience. If you haven’t tried it – it’s a fascinating concept. Using a webcam you are matched to a random person. You can see them and they you. Just the two of you. I haven’t explored it any further. The first person I saw was holding a gun to his head and then after a few seconds he disappeared. I did try a few others and found that they disappeared pretty quickly and so I gave up. The thing was it was fascinating. Three individuals, a couple all saw me and switched off. I did likewise to someone else. Then a Japanese guy hung around for what seemed like a lot longer – maybe waiting for me to speak. I decided without any conscious thought to shut down.

It left me feeling profoundly disturbed momentarily. Or so I thought. That was an hour or so ago. I might venture back – hopefully not to see anyone holding a gun to their head.
